Three reasons why GenAI will transform legal departments

Nearly all (89%) of businesses expect GenAI to have a major or transformative impact on how they operate. The technology is already turbocharging software development cycles and slashing customer service costs. Any operation that contains high volumes of repetitive tasks, complexity or risk is ripe for disruption by GenAI. Legal work, which has all of these, stands to benefit hugely from the technology.

Too many documents, too much complexity, not enough time

Many legal teams manually handle large volumes of documents such as contracts or regulatory filings, which can tie up significant amounts of time that qualified professionals could otherwise dedicate to higher-value work. It also increases the risk of errors. Working with these documents is often inefficient, with large amounts of time spent on tasks such as data extraction and clause identification.

And because legal documents are typically complex, it can be challenging to identify financial and legal risks within them, even with expert lawyers. Finally, there’s the issue of teamwork: when people are geographically dispersed or use different systems, it can be hard for them to work together effectively.

Why GenAI + cloud = the answer

Today, the combination of GenAI technologies with Google Cloud is ideally suited to address all of these challenges. In doing so, it can transform the way that legal departments work. We see three key advantages:

1. Automation. GenAI excels at dramatically speeding up and de-risking complex tasks through automation. Google Cloud’s Document AI applies this capability, for example by automatically extracting key information from contracts and compliance-related documents, or identifying clauses.

2. Easier compliance and risk management. GenAI models can be trained to check for specific regulatory requirements or internal policies. As with automation, this can free up time that qualified professionals would otherwise need to spend – and it can reduce the risks of non-compliance and regulatory infringements. Google Cloud AI can analyse documents for legal and financial risks, uncovering and explaining hidden vulnerabilities.

3. Better collaboration. Google Workspace is specifically designed to help teams work together wherever they are. It is especially powerful for collaborative working on documents, and now features AI tools designed to improve productivity.

In essence, GenAI plus Google Cloud makes it possible for legal teams to radically reduce time spent on routine, repetitive tasks while at the same time improving accuracy and efficiency, and reducing cost risk. We believe it’s a technology recipe that will transform the industry for the better.
