What is Gender Pay Gap Reporting?

Gender pay gap reporting allows businesses to provide an overview of the average difference in pay between male and female employees, and can be used to track disparities across industries. By producing gender pay gap reports, companies can better provide transparency and accountability which helps them address any disparities in pay that might exist in their workforce. Here in the UK, it is a legal requirement for companies with more than 250 employees to publish an annual report on gender pay gap, including context around the data, and an action plan to address any inconsistencies. For Qodea, ensuring equality and creating a truly inclusive workplace is a pivotal part of our business strategy – and our ability to visualise data and make data driven decisions helps to support us on this mission.

The Challenge

Qodea’s People Team needed a standardised approach to monitoring gender pay gap data so they could access insights faster and make better informed business decisions. Reviewing gender pay gap data had previously been a very manual process involving transferring data from their HR platform to a Google Sheet, where formulas helped to shape a view of the data. However, this was time consuming for the team to input and difficult for Senior Leadership Teams to access and use the data.

The Outcome

The decision to use Google AppSheet to create the Gender Pay Gap report was a simple one for Qodea – it’s easy to use for people without technical skills, it’s cost effective, and it’s a product that Qodea loves!

The solution, built in AppSheet, takes data from the HR platform and pushes it into a highly visual analytics dashboard. The dynamic dashboard functionality allows users to access data such as:

  • Hourly pay breakdowns
  • Head count by gender
  • Pay gap information

Users can simply toggle this data view between departments and location, generating insights to action further. The functionality also allows users to make proposed changes for team pay and see their impact on the overall business gender pay gap.

Building on this, the team have also begun working on an ethnicity pay gap report. Whilst this isn’t currently a legal requirement like the gender pay gap report, visualising and reporting on ethnicity data helps us make better, more inclusive decisions.

Reflecting on the project, Qodea’s Head of People Charlotte Batters explains how, “The aim for creating this tool was to give a broader audience access to the right data in order for them to make better, data driven decisions. The tool is simple to use and gives every leader a bespoke insight into their team. We hope that with more people understanding and driving towards a fairer and more representative working population, the impact we’ll make will be bigger, faster.”

Going beyond the Gender Pay Gap

Initiatives like the Gender Pay Gap AppSheet project are really important to the work Qodea is doing around Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) and are heavily driven by Qodea’s DEI board.

The internal boards at Qodea are striving to make the insights from reports such as the gender pay gap more actionable to drive positive change throughout the business. In the future, there is a view to even take the anonymised data available and use the Looker platform, using this information to drive DEI initiatives forward.
